Bridge Piercing

A bridge piercing sits at the top of the nose, between the eyes — a horizontal surface piercing that crosses the nose bridge at its narrowest point. It is one of the most striking facial placements available, and one of the most anatomy-dependent. The shape of your nose bridge, the thickness of your tissue, and the amount of pinchable skin at that location all determine whether a bridge piercing is viable and where it should actually sit.

This is a surface piercing, which means it passes through a shallow plane of skin rather than through a defined structure like cartilage. That distinction matters. Surface piercings are more sensitive to angle, depth, and jewelry fit than most other placements, and more prone to migration or rejection when any of those variables are off. A bridge that is placed well and fitted correctly can last for years. One that is not tends to announce the problem early.

At Stacked, we spend more time on the marking for a bridge piercing than almost any other. We look at the shape and width of your nose bridge, the pinchability of the tissue, the position of any underlying structure, and how jewelry will sit and move against your face before we commit to anything. If a bridge piercing is right for your anatomy, we will design the placement carefully. If it is not — if the tissue is too thin or the bridge too narrow to support jewelry safely over time — we will tell you clearly. That honesty is part of the appointment.

Why Stacked Piercing?

Why a bridge piercing at Stacked?

Because a surface piercing on your face deserves more than a quick assessment and a standard bar.

The bridge is one of the more unforgiving placements we offer. There is limited tissue to work with, a long healing timeline, and a real margin for error if placement or jewelry sizing is treated casually. We spend the time on the marking that this placement requires, size jewelry based on your specific nose bridge, and stay with you through healing so the result has the best possible chance of lasting. That is what The Stacked Method™ is built around.

What Makes a Bridge Piercing Different

Most facial piercings pass through a defined tissue structure — the nostril, the lip, the cartilage of the ear. A bridge piercing is different. It is a surface piercing, which means the needle passes through a shallow pinch of skin across the nose bridge rather than through a fixed anatomical landmark. The jewelry sits just under the skin on both sides, with both decorative ends visible from the front.

That surface placement is what gives the bridge piercing its distinctive, architectural quality — two points of jewelry framing the nose from above, sitting level and precise. It is also what makes the placement more demanding. The tissue at the bridge of the nose is thin and in an area of constant subtle movement: facial expression, glasses frames, squinting, sleeping. All of it affects how the piercing heals and how long it lasts.

Jewelry fit is particularly important here. The bar has to be long enough to sit without tension on the tissue, but not so long that it moves excessively. Both of those extremes accelerate migration. We size based on your specific anatomy, not a standard default.

We pierce bridge piercings with 14g ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium straight barbells. Initial length typically falls around 5/8” (16mm) or 3/4” (18mm) depending on the width of your nose bridge and the depth of the tissue.

The straight barbell is the appropriate jewelry type for a bridge piercing because it follows the horizontal plane of the nose bridge without introducing curve or angle that would create uneven pressure on the tissue. Sizing matters significantly here: a bar that is too short puts tension on the skin from the inside, and a bar that is too long moves more than it should against the face. Both outcomes work against healing and increase the risk of migration over time.

We size based on your anatomy. Not a standard default, not the most common size — what actually fits your nose bridge.

Bridge Piercing Process

Bridge piercing process

The marking process for a bridge piercing typically takes longer than for most other placements — and that is intentional. The position of the piercing on the nose bridge has to account for symmetry relative to the eyes, the natural shape of the bridge, how the jewelry will sit at rest and in motion, and the depth of the tissue available. We take our time with this step because it is the step that determines everything else.

Once placement is marked and approved together, the piercing is done with a needle. Some piercers work freehand; others use a cork or forceps to stabilize the tissue depending on anatomy and what gives the most accurate result. A taper guides the jewelry into place. Precise, calm, and unhurried from start to finish.

Why the Marking Takes Longest Here

The bridge piercing sits at the intersection of several variables that have to be right simultaneously: symmetry relative to both eyes, alignment with the natural axis of the nose, tissue depth sufficient to support jewelry without tension, and placement far enough from the eye socket to sit comfortably. Getting all of those right on a face that is not perfectly symmetrical — no face is — takes time and a careful eye.

That is not time we rush through. It is the step that makes the difference between a bridge piercing that sits exactly where it should and one that always looks slightly off. We take it seriously because the result lives on your face.

A Note on Longevity

Bridge piercings carry a higher likelihood of migration or rejection over time than piercings anchored in cartilage or a defined structure. This is true of most surface placements, and it is not a reason to avoid one — it is a reason to approach it carefully and maintain it well.

Careful placement, correct jewelry sizing, and consistent aftercare significantly improve long-term outcomes. Some clients wear bridge piercings for many years without issue. Others find that the placement shifts over time regardless of care. We will be honest with you about what your anatomy supports and what realistic long-term expectations look like. A piercing that lasts starts with a placement designed to last.

Pain Level 3-5/10

Most clients find a bridge piercing more manageable than they expect. The tissue at the nose bridge is thin, which means the needle passes through quickly. The sensation is brief — a sharp pinch followed by some tenderness and mild swelling around the bridge in the days after. Individual experience varies based on anatomy and personal threshold.

Bridge Piercing Healing Timeline

Healing Time: 6-12+ months

Bridge piercings heal on the longer end of the timeline. As a surface piercing in a high-movement area of the face, healing is affected by daily expression, sleeping position, eyewear, and anything that makes contact with or puts pressure on the bridge of the nose. Even when the piercing looks settled from the outside, the tissue underneath may still be working through the process.

The most important thing during healing is protecting the placement from unnecessary pressure and contact. Glasses frames that rest directly on or near the piercing are one of the most common sources of irritation — we will talk through this at your appointment based on your specific placement and what you wear. Sleeping on your back when possible, avoiding direct water pressure in the shower, and consistent aftercare all make a meaningful difference over the long healing timeline.

Downsizing

Downsizing is assessed at your six-week check-up appointment and done if the fit calls for it. Initial jewelry is sized to accommodate any swelling, but once that settles, excess bar length can create movement the healing tissue does not need.

Because a bridge piercing is a surface placement, we are particularly attentive to how the jewelry is sitting at the six-week mark — whether it is under tension, shifting, or showing any early signs of migration. If the fit is right and everything is settling well, we leave it. If an adjustment would serve the healing, we make it then.

A piercing starts in the studio, but the healing process is each client's responsibility and can’t happen here. At Stacked, we require our clients to come back in for a six-week checkup. This way, we can help troubleshoot any concerns you may have, take a peek at the healing piercing, and give advice as needed.
