Helix Piercing Information
Pain Level 3–6/10
Pain is personal, so this can vary. For most people, a helix piercing is more noticeable than a lobe piercing, but still very manageable.
Helix Piercing Healing Timeline
Healing Time: 6-12+ months
A helix piercing heals more slowly because it sits in cartilage. Even when it looks settled from the outside, the inside may still be healing, which is why patience and good follow-through matter so much.
Downsizing
This is one of the most important parts of healing well. A post that is too long for too long can move excessively, catch on hair or clothing, and create unnecessary irritation. The APP notes that many piercings require a downsize before they are fully healed, and that jewelry that is too long can snag easily and lead to irritation and renewed swelling.
Your initial jewelry is selected to leave room for swelling, but that does not mean it should stay that way for the full healing period.
For helix piercing, the initial downsize is often considered around 6 weeks, depending on swelling, jewelry style, and how your body is healing. Some people need more time. Others are ready right on schedule.
A piercing begins in the studio, but the healing happens with you. We require a six-week check-up for every client, so we can take a look at how things are healing, talk through any questions, and offer guidance.
