Helix Piercing

A helix piercing looks effortless on the right ear. Getting it there requires more thought than most people expect.

Because it sits in cartilage, the way a helix piercing is placed has a real impact on how it heals, how it wears, and how it holds up over time. Placement that does not account for your anatomy — or jewelry that is not sized correctly from the start — makes healing harder than it needs to be.

At Stacked, we look at your anatomy, your existing piercings, and what you want this part of your ear to become before anything is marked. Whether you want a single helix, multiple placements, or space to add a chain down the line, we design with the full picture in mind so the result feels balanced, wearable, and built to last.

Why Stacked Piercing?

Why a helix piercing at Stacked?

Because cartilage placement done thoughtfully is what makes the difference between a piercing that lasts and one that never quite settles.

We assess your anatomy before anything is marked, guide you through jewelry that is hypoallergenic and designed for healing, and place everything with long-term comfort in mind. The six-week check-in is built into the process because we stay with you through healing — not just through the appointment. That is what The Stacked Method™ is built around.

Why Placement Matters More Here

The helix is one of the most versatile spots on the ear, but cartilage is also less forgiving than soft tissue. Angle, depth, and jewelry fit all have to work together from the start. A placement that does not account for your anatomy — or jewelry sized incorrectly for your tissue — creates friction that makes healing significantly harder.

This is not a piercing where close enough is good enough. Thoughtful placement from the beginning is what separates a helix piercing that becomes a permanent, comfortable part of your ear from one that you end up retiring.

We have options across a range, from just getting started to more elevated pieces. You can browse a few options in our Lookbook.

We pierce with ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium flat back posts and threadless tops. Helix piercings are typically done at 16g, with post lengths usually ranging from 5/16" (8mm) to 3/8" (10mm) depending on your tissue and anatomy. Proper fit matters here. Jewelry that is too tight can create pressure, while jewelry that is too long can shift and catch more easily.

Hoops can be worn later, once the cartilage is fully settled. For most people, that is typically around 12+ months.

Helix Piercing Process

Helix piercing process

We begin by looking closely at your ear — the shape of the outer cartilage ridge, your existing piercings, and what the anatomy can comfortably support in that area. There is no one correct placement for a helix piercing. The right spot depends on your structure, your stack goals, and how this piercing will sit alongside what is already there.

Once placement is marked and approved, the piercing is done with a needle. Some piercers work freehand; others use a cork or forceps depending on the anatomy and the angle required. A taper is then used to guide jewelry carefully into place. No rushed decisions. Precise placement and a calm, supported experience from start to finish.

Pain Level 3–6/10

Pain is personal, so this can vary. For most people, a helix piercing is more noticeable than a lobe piercing, but still very manageable.

Helix Piercing Healing Timeline

Healing Time: 6-12+ months

A helix piercing heals more slowly because it sits in cartilage. Even when it looks settled from the outside, the inside may still be healing, which is why patience and good follow-through matter so much.

Downsizing

This is one of the most important parts of healing well. A post that is too long for too long can move excessively, catch on hair or clothing, and create unnecessary irritation. The APP notes that many piercings require a downsize before they are fully healed, and that jewelry that is too long can snag easily and lead to irritation and renewed swelling.

Your initial jewelry is selected to leave room for swelling, but that does not mean it should stay that way for the full healing period.

For helix piercing, the initial downsize is often considered around 6 weeks, depending on swelling, jewelry style, and how your body is healing. Some people need more time. Others are ready right on schedule.

A piercing begins in the studio, but the healing happens with you. We require a six-week check-up for every client, so we can take a look at how things are healing, talk through any questions, and offer guidance.
